the purple moonlight pages are my reckoning. the triumph song of the perpetual student. the jack of all trades is a master of none but often times better than a master of one. i knew after completing the milo project i wanted to claim a space on the fringes, to become a poet for real. no longer hiding. returning the rhythm to the word. it became obvious to me, listening to "casual horns, dog" that my friends, the jefferson park boys, were precisely skilled to help me find my voice in this way. i will be always grateful to kenny, mike and aaron for playing and producing the music on this album. they are artists of the highest caliber, of seemingly endless inspiration, who tirelessly yank ideas out of only the ripest clouds. it has been my great honor to rap on their works.

the artwork was made by my longtime and lifelong collaborator alexander kollman. while driving through alabama, i would call alex and we would discuss the record, our visions of it, our dreams of it, and the world around us. often times our conversations veered into the realm of aspirational shadowchat and somehow mr kollman was able to distill the essence of these dialogues into the image below, an immediate and pronounced icon.

this project is the beginning of a correction. to produce work that is fundamentally about healing, uplifting, and protecting the positive and funky individuals on this planet. at the upcoming gigs, i'll be playing songs from my beginning as milo to scallops hotel, sprinkles of the hellfyre days, red wall, nostrum grocers, joints from the hoodwinker tape as well as new numbers straight out the purple moonlight pages.

shit talkin'

at the very edge of who i think i am, shaking. the discipline and focus needed to activate one's dreams takes, more often than not, if the vision is original, an entire lifetime. i see artists in this time clinging to markets, numbers, dollars, cosigns, alliances, and bright lights. i suppose not much has changed.

when i started rapping, to me, it seemed obvious this art form speaks directly to the animus of the person. it goes beyond the vessel and taps into the deep murk, the darkest umbra of self. and swirling around in the toilet basin of our collective unconscious there is, unsurprisingly, lots of trauma.

but what else?

that feels like my question, my purpose, my sight. what else is there down here? lots of detritus, lots of broken pieces of pablum and nonsense, but i have always loved spare parts. what can i make of these? at first it was nerd-hop, then art rap, then poetry, now simply rappin'.

what is it these artists are grasping for? the academy has no answers. silicon valley has no answers. broadway has no answers. hollywood is vacant. the live stream contaminated.

the chitlin circuit hoppin doe. the dive bar stretches on, infinitely.
there's a minivan waiting for me in a lot in toledo.

as a creative it is imperative i do not wait to be saved.

my vision is undisturbed and my focus powerful. i want for nothing. i have carved a safe space from lava, i roast marshmallows from my perch and ponder the illustrious.

s.al interview (STU TRIPS 002) + premiere

on the road up north doing a bit of meandering and sauntering, found myself at the renowned art colony above SOULFOLKS RECORDS and was able to secure a brief, stimulating interview with the reclusive, visionary artist known as s.al or alex kollman. he represents 1/1,000th of the ruby yacht crew, 1/2 of the PATTERNS workshop, 1/2 of REDWALL and 1/4th the kollmans in kenosha. the following is excerpted from a conversation held in the artist's studio, this accompanies a new video for "approachable" & "small shop" from s.al's latest solo release, "i steel of radiance, i feel so action" or the "strata" communique.

PINK NAVEL: what al makes is very, hm, how shall i put this? extremely wise. i hear the music he makes, in the process and i see extreme focus and intent put into every step.

we are bored by the generic mediocrity dominating the rap landscape at present.
we are appalled by the doublespeak deployed from dubious agents working in tandem with nefarious sources to take what is individual and make mass produced. to assume our trust in an unnatural process is to make us incompetent. if we are anything, it is able. if we are anything, it is.

from perches, short foot holds, and dugout lookouts we make magic with sleight of poetics. folding the happenstance fabric of time-space back into itself, it's tailors dominating the 21st century. tailors and electricians. we grow tired of how algorithms spit. programmers cannot seem to capture the spirit of what is or what could be. literal romantics lacking hope it is obvious their visions are plagued by the past. we tap shoulders, we point, we duck n cover.

37 gems is an album by the ruby yacht. it was forged in secret with love and an understanding of dream logic. this album could very possibly change how you appear to yourself outside of mirrors.

what is the ruby yacht? a question as old as time and one that deserves a new answer with every asked utterance.

the ruby yacht is a poet gang, a conglomerate of wacko's who obviously love nothing more than life itself. we are the hoarders of cheat codes, the speakerknockers, the wellthunk monks. potent delivery.

the beat invitational was a hoot. 14 hours of rhythm and pulse orchestrated, uninterrupted, free transmissions that oriented toward healing vibration. we, soulfolks, are grateful to the hordes and legions that ventured far and wide from remote isle and snowcapped peaks to the temple in the Green. the evening was documented well on s.al's ig. there were a number of left over commemorative tank tops and totes, any interest out there in purchasing? leave comment if so.

for autumn i've planned a mixtape (cassette exclusive) and a slim book of thoughts. my primary method of pushing this project will be a blitz of shows through a handful of american cities to workshop and woodshed materials for [redacted].

the first mixtape i made was in 2011 and there's warm yellow tint nostalgia flooding my mind presently to be adding to the catalog in that direction in 2019 and beyond. mixtapes are a reliable time machine. there's a special sovereignty to mixtapes, a fortress that is built from sound collage and pastiche that becomes bullet proof in psionic ways. this project makes me think of opening the front door in the evening after a thick, heavy rain and walking out into the yard to pick up long, thick as thumbs nightcrawlers. this tape emerges in that same way, slicks and slides. midnight blue murk for the headphones and lone nights in with single bulb light sources.

for the next month at the afrolab, eldon is working with us on new imaginative technologies of rhythm and poetry. the esteemed luminary of dub and peng who happens to mc, dj, and smell good is in town from London. ruby yacht redguard, soulfolks deepbop scientist and bookoo bread co., big dough specialist, eldon somers is a true wizard's wizard.  when you hear what we've been working on, remember this introduction.

summer is in full swing and i haven't picked enough berries. i'll holler with show details in the next week or so.

beatitudinal measurements

peace all. we at the soulfolks thinktank are hard at work preparing for what will surely be the hypbeatitudinal event of the year on this particular strip of American coastline. 

so far, over 30 beatmakers have been sourced from as far as Australia to come bring the bop and thump. admission is ten bones and will get you in all day, 12 hours. the shop will be open from noon to five and when the shop closes the vibe will undoubtedly switch over to more of a proper show experience. 

if you're on the fence about visiting us for this event, we'd ask you to kindly hop off and come on down. this is the last event we will throw for awhile as we eye an expansion towards a SOULFOLKS WEST location (see: bookstore) in LA.

SOULFOLKS FIRST ANNUAL (THAT IS SECOND) BEAT INVITATIONAL

the Soulfolks (1st) Annual Beat Invitational is upon us, that captivating time of year where we open the gates of the emporium, yank the sound system (which has had some additions from last year) and fill the Biddeford Casco Bay coast with the sounds of bop, bap, thump, swing and groove. 

the event itself takes place same day as last year, July 6th at 53 main street biddeford maine 04005. beginning at noon pm ending at midnight am, we plan on having some exclusives and the shop will be open for your perusing convenience until 5pm. admission is ten dollars ($10).
tickets can be bought here. 

this is our second invitational and we learned quite a bit from the first. we've expanded the hours of the event to accommodate everyone who applies (hopefully). not limiting anything to genre, we welcome beatmakers of all varieties and do intend for the soulfolks space to be one of hospitality to all travelers. as always members of the ruby yacht crew will be present party rocking, crowd moving, socializing and in general, making it happen. 

we are accepting, at this time, email submissions for the line up. 

send correspondence to hotelscallops@gmail.com with your name, alias, age, location, crew affiliations, links to your work, and your favorite producer. we will get back to you within 48 hours notifying you of your acceptance to perform at the invitational. more data will be given to performers as the date nears. 

the nature of the event is to find space outside of time and the usual. biddeford maine is a small town, quiet and welcoming. with a view of water from the front door of soulfolks, this is an opportunity for beatmakers to find themselves in a relaxing, idyllic location among a small and passionate group of likeminded summoners. the shop is flanked on one side by an a1 top shelf Vietnamese restaurant called que huong and on the other side by a rotisserie chicken shack called dizzy birds. we are across the street from a renovated mill with a pizzeria and ice cream shop. we are one block away from time and tide cafe as well as two blocks from part and parcel general store. biddeford welcomes foot traffic and you'd be well suited to take some of the abundant inspiration available on a light walk through the downtown streets.
